The laser pistol is the de facto sidearm throughout the galaxy in the 25th century, in use by various parties including the Earth Defense Directorate.

In its use, it is capable of either stunning or killing a sentient subject (BR25: Film, "Awakening", "Vegas in Space", "The Plot to Kill a City, Part II"). Laser pistols can also be used as a weapon of choice for "picking locks", disabling electronics, et cetera (BR25: "Vegas in Space", "The Plot to Kill a City, Part II").

Laser weapons are not without their drawbacks, as they are ineffective against certain creatures, including the Vorvon (BR25: "Space Vampire"). In the case of Markos Marcilka, due to the fact that his nerve endings have been partially severed, lasers on a stun setting are ineffective (BR25: "The Plot to Kill a City, Part I").
